sleep and baby’s first year

What is the right amount of sleep for a baby in a 24-hour period? The answer will depend on your baby’s sleep needs, which will change as he grows. The chart below is provided to serve as a sleep guide for the first year. Like most of our guidelines, these are averages based exclusively on the Babywise  population.

Weeks               Time Spent in Sleep              Number of Naps

  1 - 2         17-19 hours which include         5-6 naps a day

  3 - 4         16-18 hours which include         5-6 naps a day

  5 - 7         15-18 hours which include         4-5 naps a day

  8 - 12       14-17 hours which include         4-5 naps a day

 13 -16       13-17 hours which include         3-4 naps a day

 17 -24       13-16 hours which include         3-4 naps a day

 25 -38       13-15 hours which include         2-3 naps a day

 39 -52       12-15 hours which include            2 naps a day
